The physics of guided atom laser

The talk will be divided in two parts. The first one will be devoted to the production and characterization of guided atom lasers. The  control of the mode populations of guided atom lasers (GALs) is demonstrated by showing that the entropy per
particle of an optically GAL, and the one of the trapped Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) from which it has been produced are the same. This observation is valid for the two outcoupling schemes, magnetic and optical, that we have investigated. We can prepare GAL in a nearly pure monomode regime (85 % in the ground state). Furthermore, optical outcoupling has enabled the production of spinor guided atom lasers. The second part of the talk will be devoted to examples of new physics that can be explored using guided atom lasers. The emphasis will be put on their interaction with localized optical defects.
